The President of the Republic met with the Riigikogu's Foreign Affairs Committee

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with members of the Riigikogu's Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss diverse issues connected with foreign policy.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, informed the President of the Republic of the debate about Estonian foreign policy having taken place in the Riigikogu on Tuesday. The meeting dealt at greater length with problems associated with Estonia's missions abroad, focusing on expanding their network, on their manning and funding. It was jointly emphasized that in order to ensure Estonia's political and economic competitiveness it was of paramount importance that the implementation of an active and consistent foreign policy were guaranteed.

The President of the Republic stressed separately the importance of external economic policy in the general context of foreign policy, pointing out, among other things, that Estonia's potential in its economic relations with other new EU Member States needed to be promoted more. Against that background, also the EU cross-border cooperation, which is advanced by continuous progress made in infrastructure development, was addressed.

The meeting dealt with international security problems as well. The participants agreed that, regarding security risks, the greatest danger to Estonia was posed by environmental hazards, such as single-hull tankers and nuclear energy.
