The President of the Republic visited enterprises in Ida-Virumaa08.06.2004
President Arnold Rüütel today visited enterprises in the County of Ida-Virumaa. In the morning, President Rüütel visited the Limited Company Silmet Grupp, where Chairman of the Board Tiit Vähi acquainted him with the company's operations. The President of the Republic familiarized himself also with construction works at the Port of Sillamäe.
The President of the Republic opined that Sillamäe had great potential as a regional transit hub between the European Union and the eastern market. "Building a port at Sillamäe enhances Estonia's potential as a transit country and enables to spread out handling of transit shipments in regional terms," President Rüütel said. He added that the Estonian state in its entirety would benefit from Ida-Virumaa's progress.
In the afternoon, President Rüütel visited the freight-car assembling factory UVZ&AVR and the building materials factory AS Silbet, where he was shown around by Executive Director of UVZ&AVR Vadim Gvozdev and Chairman of the Board of AS Silbet Vyacheslav Shlyk. The President of the Republic noted that the factory UVZ&AVR was a very good example of Estonian-Russian cooperation and praised the AS Silbet for its environment-friendly manufacturing process.
Thereafter, the President of the Republic talked with the leadership of the County Government of Ida-Virumaa and the Board of the Association of Local Governments of Ida-Virumaa about the county's development opportunities and problems.
The President of the Republic today also is going to visit the Limited Company Viru Keemia Grupp and the Virumaa College and the Oil Shale Research Institute of the Tallinn Technical University.
During his visit, the President of the Republic was accompanied by Acting County Governor of Ida-Virumaa Leo Raidma, Deputy County Governor Agu Värimäe, Mayor of Sillamäe Ain Kiviorg, and Mayor of Kohtla-Järve Yevgeny Solovyov.
