The President of the Republic received an Honorary Doctorate from the Kazakh State University

President Rüütel met with Mr. Abykaev, the Chairman of the Senate of KazakhstanPresident Arnold Rüütel on Wednesday continued his official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan by meeting with Mr. Abykaev, the Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan, who gave an overview of the work of the upper house of the country's parliament, the Senate, and also of the development of legislation and civil society.

Thereafter, the President of the Republic in Astana laid flowers at the foot of the Monument to Fatherland Defenders and planted a spruce at the Alley of the Heads of State.

The President of the Republic also visited the Eurasian National University situated in Astana that has been founded on the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The University has been named after Russian ethnologist Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev and is concentrated primarily on developing the young generation's management and scientific potential in the field of humanities.

Thereafter, the Estonian Head of State in the Large Auditorium full of listeners delivered a speech presenting Estonian reform experience.

The President of the Republic speaking also about Estonia's priorities after the accession to the European Union and NATO said: "We are striving for a European-type sustainable, well-balanced and safe society based on economic growth and characterized by tolerance, justice and solidarity."

On top of that, the Estonian Head of State visited the Presidential Cultural Centre where he familiarized himself with Kazakhstan's rich historical and folklore heritage.

Wednesday evening, President Nazarbayev hosted a state dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Estonia. The Kazakh Head of State in his address delivered at the dinner congratulated the Estonian state and people on an historic event - the accession to the European Union. Quoting the dreams of Estonian diplomat Kaarel Robert Pusta of creating a large democratic union of European states, President Nazarbayev also expressed hope that President Rüütel's visit enabled the relations between Estonia and Kazakhstan to reach a new, higher level.

President Rüütel in his address dealt with possibilities for cooperation between our two countries in various areas. "People-to-people relations, sincere realization that there is a lot we can learn from each other - all this brings our peoples closer together," the Estonian Head of State added.
