President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today continued their official visit to Switzerland. The President of the Republic met with the Estonian Honorary Consul, Otto Graf, and familiarized himself with the Zurich Canton.
In the morning, President Rüütel visited the Confederative Research Centre of Agrarian Ecology and Agriculture at Zurich-Reckenholz, which is the oldest research centre of the kind in Switzerland. The Estonian Head of State took a particular interest in research projects concerning organic farming and genetically modified plants. President Rüütel opined that Estonia and Switzerland had similar interests in agricultural research and suggested that bilateral cooperation should be promoted in this area.
In the afternoon, the President of the Republic visited the Cantonal Strickhof Centre at Lindau where he was shown around by Rolf Gerber, Head of the Board of Agriculture and Nature of the Zurich Canton, and Marc Kummer, Director of the Strickhof Centre. President Rüütel held that, as to environment-friendly farming and preservation of cultivated landscape, Estonia should follow the example of Switzerland.
The President of the Republic today, on top of that, is going to see the farm of Cantonal Counsellor Hansjörg Schmid, President of the Swiss Milk Producers Association, at Welsikon-Dinhard and visit the Town of Regensberg, where he will meet with Mayor Fritz Kilchenmann.
President Rüütel will arrive back in Estonia late this evening.
