15.05.2004

President Arnold Rüütel today in Tartu attended the closing ceremony of students' history research competition and delivered before young researches a welcoming address.

According to the Head of State, the five-year-long tradition of students' history research competitions and an active participation in it confirmed that history was an inexhaustible source of exciting research material. As demonstrated by the research themes of this year's competition, both the history of people and state and history of villages or families attracted equal interest, added President Rüütel.

The President of the Republic as patron of the competition announced this year's history competition, the fifth in a series, on 1 September 2003. The topic of the competition was "Muutuv Eesti 20. sajandil" (20th Century Changes in Estonia).

The first award at the high school level went to Reili Ebral, Liina Pihu, Frank Jüris, Veiko Reiman, Robert Norak and Anne-Mari Rebane for their competition entry "From the Soviet Time to Present-day Estonia - People in Changing Times". Martin Teras whose work was entitled "The 1992 Monetary Reform in Estonia" placed second and Piret Aasma with her entry "Individual Information Fields of Three Generations" third.

At the basic school level, the first award was given to Hannes Luts for his entry "Does Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) Have a Future?" and Viljar Käämer won the second and Sille Kase the third award for "Changes in the Rural Life of Are Municipality in 1975-2000" and "Jüri Jaakson in the Revolutionary Years of the 20th Century" respectively.

The students' history research competition is aimed at elaborating on national values, maintaining the bond and continuity between generations, deepening of students' interest in history and expanding their horizon, and developing students' capabilities of independent research. The competition is organised by the Estonian History Teachers' Association and the Körber Foundation from Germany. The President's Cultural Foundation donated to the competition monetary awards and the Ministry of Education and Research books, which were awarded to the winners according to the suggestion of the competition's jury.
