The President of the Republic met with Sulev Vahtre and Ain Kaalep14.05.2004
President Arnold Rüütel today in Tartu met with Professor Emeritus Sulev Vahtre and Ain Kaalep who two months earlier had published an open letter to the Presidents of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Finland.
Their conversation focused on the positions expressed in the letter on the relations between the Baltic States and Russia. The meeting, which took place in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, came to the conclusion that overcoming historical injustice experienced by Estonia is a complicated process requiring goodwill from all involved parties. They also talked about how to better consolidate Estonian society in view of education and labour market problems.
