The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Costa Rica
13.05.2004

President Rüütel at Kadriorg received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica, Xinnia Luisa Guevara-ContrerasPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica, Xinnia Luisa Guevara-Contreras.

The President of the Republic recollected that diplomatic relations between Estonia and Costa Rica in 1991 had been restored immediately after Estonia had regained independence. "During the preceding years of the Cold War Costa Rica had become an outstanding advocate of the Baltic countries' sovereignty who continuously criticised the occupation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union. We are very grateful to you for your attention and support," President Rüütel said.

"We know based on historical experience of successful countries that freedom, human rights and economic progress can be achieved, and poverty be overcome only under conditions of democracy. We also know that democracy can be implemented only among free people," said Ambassador Guevara-Contreras. The Ambassador added that they therefore admired other peoples who were fighting for their liberty as fiercely as the Estonians in pursuit of their independence in 1991. "This very desire of freedom and peaceful coexistence has led Estonia to the European Union, by which Estonia, one of the youngest states in Europe, has proven its political maturity," Ambassador Guevara-Contreras said.
