The Editor in Chief handed to the President of the Republic a special issue of the magazine just published that covers the Baltic States, among other topics the bicentenary of the Tartu University Hospital.

According to the President of the Republic, the special issue was a great acknowledgment not only of the Tartu University Hospital but also of the whole of Estonia and all those who had contributed to the development of medicine and to health promotion in Estonia. President Rüütel expressed hope that now, after Estonia had joined the European Union, the preconditions for medical cooperation between Estonia and Germany were better than ever before.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Jürgen Dröge, read a congratulatory address by the Federal Minister of Health and Social Security, Ulla Schmidt, on the bicentenary of the Tartu University Hospital. According to Minister Schmidt, Estonia had every reason to celebrate this anniversary with pride because this hospital was not just an educational institution like many others, but part of a university which, from the very beginning, had fostered the European idea.

Urmas Siigur, Chairman of Board of the Tartu University Hospital, emphasised that the development of medicine in Estonia had always been connected with the Tartu University Hospital which, in turn, had been build in compliance with best German standards. He voiced hope that the medical cooperation between Germany and Estonia would continue successfully in future too.

Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift that has been published since 1874 is the largest and oldest German-language medical magazine in Europe.

Supplements to the magazine are published twice a year and are usually dealing with a particular disease or problem. A supplement with this kind of orientation like the one just out is the first in the history of the magazine steeped in tradition.
