The President of the Republic met the Mayor of Reykjavik and visited the Parliament of Iceland

President Rüütel met with the Mayor of Reykjavik, Thorolfur Arnason in the Höfdi HousePresident Rüütel on his state visit to Iceland met with the Mayor of Reykjavik, Thorolfur Arnason. Their meeting was held in the Höfdi House, where two historic events have taken place: in 1986 - a summit meeting between President Ronald Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev, and, in 1991 - a meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Iceland and the Baltic States, at which Iceland was the first country to recognise the independence of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The President of the Republic also visited the Parliament of Iceland (Althing), where he met with the President of the Parliament, Halldur Blöndal, and also familiarized himself with the work of the Parliament's General Assembly. Thereafter, President Rüütel met with Members of the Althingi's Fisheries, Social Affairs and Foreign Affairs Committees. Their meeting addressed several issues. Minister of the Environment Villu Reiljan gave an overview of Estonia's positions on fishery policies and maritime safety, and Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Meelis Atonen spoke about opening up energy markets in Estonia.

In the evening, President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson together with his spouse, Mrs. Dorrit Moussaieff, hosted a state dinner in honour of the Estonian Head of State and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel.
