The President of the Republic embarked on a state visit to Iceland

The President of the Republic embarked on a state visit to IcelandPresident Rüütel began his state visit to Iceland by meeting with the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson.

At the meeting, the Icelandic Head of State congratulated Estonia on the accession to NATO and the European Union. The Estonian Head of State thanked Iceland for its support to Estonia and the other Baltic States during the process of restoring independence and also the following years, which had set an example for the whole world. Both sides noted that small countries working closely together were able to significantly influence world politics. The Heads of State also discussed possibilities for future cooperation between Estonia and Iceland both at the bilateral level and in the framework of international organisations.

President Rüütel at the meeting presented President Grimsson with the Collar of the Order of the White Star. President Grimson presented the Estonian Head of State with the Icelandic Order of the Falcon. Thereafter, the two Presidents held a joint press conference.

Then followed a seminar entitled "Banking in the Age of Globalization: Nordic-Baltic Dimension" with President of the Nordic Investment Bank Jon Sigurdsson and Deputy Governor of Eesti Pank Andres Sutt as keynote speakers.

Also the members of the Estonian official delegation, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Meelis Atonen, Minister of the Environment Villu Reiljan, Minister of Culture Urmas Paet and State Secretary Heiki Loot met with their Icelandic counterparts.
