President Rüütel today attended a EU flag-raising ceremony in the Town of Võru. Thereafter, the President of the Republic on the occasion of Estonia's accession to the European Union planted three oak trees: at the Kreutzwald Upper Secondary School of Võru, at a kindergarten under construction in the settlement of Lasva and at Helju and Mati Melts' farmyard in the Tammeveski Hamlet of the Lasva Rural Municipality.
According to President Rüütel, the residents of Võrumaa on this historic day could be proud because, from this day on, the eastern border of their county was the eastern border of the European Union as well.
