The President of the Republic received congratulations from his Latvian and Lithuanian counterparts

This morning, the President of the Republic of Latvia, Vaira Vīķe Freiberga, called President Rüütel to congratulate him and the whole people of Estonia on the accession to the European Union.

President Rüütel congratulated President Vaira Vīķe Freiberga and the Latvian people on Latvia's accession to the European Union.

The Presidents of the two countries expressed their common wish that our current close cooperation continued to widen and deepen also in the European Union and within the framework of cooperation between the Baltic States and the Nordic Countries. President Vīķe Freiberga in addition wished that Estonia flourished just like the trees going to be planted in Estonia on the occasion of its accession to the European Union.

This morning, also the Acting President of the Republic of Lithuania, Artūras Paulauskas, called the Estonian Head of State to congratulate President Rüütel and the whole people of Estonia on the accession to the European Union.

President Rüütel congratulated the Lithuanian Head of State and the Lithuanian people on the accession to the European Union.

Both sides of the phone conversation stressed the importance of close cooperation between Estonia and Lithuania, and agreed that it had helped the Baltic States achieve their thus-far success. On top of that, they underscored the importance of cooperation with the Nordic Countries in the field of both politics and economy, continuing also in the context of the European Union.
