President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the European People's Party, Hans-Gert Poettering.
Mr. Poettering informed the President of the Republic of his today's statement, in which he emphasises that the joint declaration of the European Union and Russia must not lead to a situation, where Russia can influence the developments in Estonia and Latvia, and thus - in the European Union.
President Rüütel agreed with Hans-Gert Poettering's position that a joint declaration between the European Union and Russia lacking an approval of acceding countries would not be appropriate.
According to the President of the Republic, the EU-Russia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement should be unconditionally extended to the acceding countries. President Rüütel noted that making under pressure from third countries, in the present case from Russia, a joint declaration, in which obligations concerning new Member States were accepted, would be unjustifiable. The President of the Republic maintained that yielding to this kind of pressure would be deplorable demonstrating that the interests of nation states acceding to the European Union are not taken into account.
Hans-Gert Poettering is the Chairman of the largest political group in the European Parliament - the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) - European Democrats.
