The President of the Republic met with the President of the European Economic and Social Committee20.04.2004
 President Rüütel today at Kadriorg received President of the European Economic and Social Committee Roger Briesch, Secretary General of the Committee Patrick Venturini and the delegation accompanying them.
Roger Briesch explained briefly further activities of the European Economic and Social Committee since, due to the enlargement of the European Union the membership of the Committee will be expanded from 222 to 320, the latter including 7 Members from Estonia. According to Roger Briesch, the Economic and Social Committee will remain a representation of organised civil society and a bridge between different areas of economic and social life.
The President of the Republic emphasized importance of the ideas of civil society both to Estonia and the whole of Europe, simultaneously highlighting historical traditions of cooperative movement and extending activities of the third sector in Estonia. To exemplify the development of civil society in Estonia, President Rüütel briefly explained also the process of our National Agreement and the activities of the President's Academic Council.
