The President of the Republic spoke at a NATO conference in Hungary
06.04.2004

President Arnold Rüütel on his visit to the Republic of Hungary today visited the Szent Istvan University at Gödöllö, near Budapest, where he in the framework of a scientific NATO conference on pollution and disaster prevention was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University.

The President of the Republic in his speech focused on issues connected with his scientific work as well as on issues connected with NATO and contemporary security risks. In his capacity as scientist, President Rüütel highlighted the importance of defence research and the indispensable role of international large-scale cooperation in monitoring and eliminating global threat sources. "Globalizing also means, among other things, that the subject area termed security is constantly expanding. And so, it is possible that in future, in the framework of NATO, we have to approach from a new angle issues, which hitherto have been regarded to be issues of environmental protection, health or agriculture," the Estonian Head of State noted.

In the afternoon, President Rüütel met with Chairwoman of the Hungarian Parliament Katalin Szili, focussing in their discussion on the enlargement of the European Union and NATO, as well as the essential role of national parliaments and the need for cooperation between them in a changing Europe.

This evening, the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ferenc Madl, will host a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel. President Rüütel will arrive back in Estonia tomorrow.
