President Rüütel today visited the training centre of infantry - Viru Single Infantry Battalion. The President of the Republic on his arrival at the battalion compound was welcomed by Commander of Defence Forces Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, Acting County Governor of Ida-Virumaa Leo Raidma, Chairman of the Board of Eesti Põlevkivi Mati Jostov, and Commander of Viru Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Jüri Järveläinen.
The Acting County Governor of Ida-Virumaa gave the President an overview of the county and its cooperation with units of the Defence Forces. The Acting Commander of Army, Lieutenant Colonel Peeter Hoppe, briefed him on the status and development plans of the forces' maneuver areas.
The President of the Republic familiarized himself with the plan of Sirgala maneuver area and watched live-fire exercises of an antitank unit. During the live-fire exercises, 90-mm antitank guns and antitank rocket launchers Carl Gustav were demonstrated.
President Rüütel expressed his delight at the good cooperation among the Viru Battalion, local authorities, the county government and the Eesti Põlevkivi. The President of the Republic opined that the development of Sirgala maneuver area in collaboration with the Eesti Põlevkivi and the County Government had definitely good prospects and was advantageous to the county as well.
According to President Rüütel, it was positive that Sirgala maneuver area was located in the vicinity of the Viru Battalion for that enabled to effectively carry out various tactical and live-fire exercises.
The President of the Republic is intending to visit in this year also other military units.
