The President's Academic Council discussed problems of water supply and distribution in Estonia
30.03.2004

The President of the Republic today with his Academic Council discussed problems of water supply and distribution in Estonia, and Estonia's readiness to implement the EU Water Framework Directive.

The Director of the Institute of Ecology of Tallinn Pedagogical University, Professor Jaan-Mati Punning, provided an overview of Estonia's water resources, and the problems of their use and management. He noted that, since Estonia suffered from lack of hydrologists with comprehensive special education, it was necessary to work out relevant curricula and get down to implementing them in collaboration between universities.

Deputy County Governor of Ida-Virumaa Agu Värimäe spoke about the floods in August 2003 in Ida-Virumaa that had been caused by extremely large amount of precipitations. According to Värimäe, it had been a natural disaster, for which the Republic of Estonia neither then nor now was sufficiently prepared.

Andres Piir, Project Manager at Inseneribüroo Urmas Nugin OÜ, gave an in-depth talk on the problems of water supply and distribution in Estonia. Andres Piir suggested that the water supply and distribution was a complex area of paramount importance to the state and, for its comprehensive management, it was necessary to form a working group consisting of relevant specialists, which should work out a national plan for integrated water management based on catchment areas.
