The President of the Republic met with representatives of Estonian Council of Churches

President Rüütel at Kadriorg met with leaders of the member churches of Estonian Council of ChurchesPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with leaders of the member churches of Estonian Council of Churches. Their meeting discussed diverse problems addressed by both the state and churches, and in respect of which, therefore, more collaboration possibilities than so far could be found.

The meeting focused on values of the Estonian society. The meeting participants agreed that the churches and the state should cooperate more in order to fight the spread of alcoholism and drugs. They expanded on the need to attach more importance to marriage and family, since destroyed families are a breeding ground for unsatisfactory performance at school and various social problems.

The President of the Republic opined that teaching different religions and ethic at school would be beneficial because it expanded the horizon of the Estonian youth and contributed to the spread of sustainable values.

President Rüütel acknowledged the great role of the Estonian Council of Churches and its member churches in society. The President of the Estonian Council of Churches, Bishop Einar Soone, told that collaboration between the state and churches had yielded many positive results, for instance in regard to renovation of church buildings, enlivening concert life and in the field of crime prevention, but there were definitely far more common interests at the level of both national and local authorities.
