The President of the Republic met the Speaker of the Danish Parliament
15.03.2004

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with Speaker of the Danish Parliament Christian Mejdahl. Their meeting focussed on the relations between Denmark and Estonia, and future possibilities of cooperation.

The President of the Republic extended gratitude to Denmark for having supported Estonia's efforts to join to the European Union and NATO, and also for our thus-far interstate cooperation in many fields. President Rüütel mentioned separately our well-developed bilateral economic and cultural ties, and also our possibilities of future cooperation in the framework of the EU agricultural and regional policies. The Speaker of the Danish Parliament shared the views of the Estonian Head of State concerning the future cooperation between Estonia and Denmark.

The meeting discussed more thoroughly our joint activities in the field of environmental protection, where Estonia and Denmark have quite a few similar interests. According to President Rüütel, our two countries in the framework of both the European Union and the Council of the Baltic Sea States were able to make a significant contribution to the protection of the Baltic Sea, and to getting under control the existing as well as potential sources of pollution.
