The President of the Republic met the Supreme Allied Commander Europe
15.03.2004

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General James L. Jones.

The President of the Republic at the meeting said that Estonia was ready to be a respectable member country of NATO and to make its contribution for this purpose. The Estonian Head of State emphasized the importance of promoting the capability of independent basic defence and the role of the Defence League and compulsory conscription in developing the defence will of the Estonian youth.

President Rüütel contended that Estonia had decided to continuously spend 2 % of its GDP on defence. General Jones welcomed this decision. Against the background of the tragic events in Madrid, both sides agreed that terrorism had become a threat, which was increasingly causing unrest in the contemporary world.

The meeting also addressed Estonia's participation in different NATO missions both at present and in future, and, on top of that, the cooperation between the European Union and NATO.
