The President of the Republic met with authors of the Language Act
10.03.2004

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Language Act met with authors of the Language Act. The attendees of the meeting reminisced about how the Language Act had been adopted on 18 January 1989. The Mother Language Day to be marked on this coming Sunday and the importance of marking that day were broached at the meeting as well.

The meeting noted in summary that the Estonian language should be appreciated more than so far. President Rüütel also suggested that the President's Academic Council in the near future should discuss the priorities concerning the survival and development of Estonian.

The Language Act of 1989 ensured in legal terms the use of Estonian as the official language of Estonia, however, it did not pay much heed to the issues of language instruction. The act was in force until 1995 when a new Language Act was passed.
