The President of the Republic met with leaders of the Riigikogu factions

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with leaders of the Riigikogu factions. The meeting addressed the issue of erecting in Tallinn a Freedom Monument. The Head of the Sustainable Development and Planning Department of Tallinn, City's Chief Architect Igor Volkov, presented an idea to erect the monument at the southern edge of the Song Festival Grounds.

The representatives of factions expressed support for President Arnold Rüütel's initiative to worthily perpetuate the Estonian's strive for freedom. It was agreed to meet after relevant discussions in the factions with the President of the Republic again.

In the meeting participated: Vice-Chairman of the Pro Patria Union Faction Andres Herkel, Chairman of the Estonian Centre Party Faction Toomas Varek, Chairman of the Estonian People's Union Faction Jaanus Männik, Chairman of the Faction of the Social Democratic Party Ivari Padar, Vice-Chairman of the Estonian Reform Party Faction Peep Aru, and Chairman of the Union for the Republic - Res Publica Faction Siim-Valmar Kiisler.

The idea of erecting the Freedom Monument in the Vabaduse Square or its vicinity has been supported by the Riigikogu's declaration of 3 June 1997. In the open competition carried out by the City Government of Tallinn in 2001, no first prize was issued. In 2003, several associations of local governments and citizens' associations gave their endorsement to the idea of erecting the Freedom Monument on the Song Festival Grounds instead of the Victory Square.
