The Republic of Estonia's 86th anniversary celebration

The 86th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will be celebrated with festive state ceremonies on February 23 and 24 in Tallinn.

On February 23 at 12:00 at the Kadriorg Palace (Foreign Art Museum), the festive ceremony "Estonia is Grateful" will begin, where the President of the Republic will present with state decorations outstanding scientists, educationalists, cultural figures, businessmen, freedom fighters, state and local government officials, advocates of civil society, cultural mediators, our friends and supporters across the world.

In the morning of February 24 at 7:35, the state flag will be raised on the Tall Hermann Tower on the Toompea Hill. At the flag raising ceremony, Chairwoman of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma will give a speech.

At 10:00 am, the President of the Republic in the Vabaduse Square will inspect a parade of the Estonian Defence Forces lead by the Commander of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, who will also give a speech.

At 11:30, the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will attend the Independence Day service in the Kaarli Church. At 13:00 pm on Toompea, in the hall of the Academy of Sciences, Prime Minister Juhan Parts will hand over this year's National Science, Culture and Sport Prizes as well as National Language Award.

At 18:00 pm, a festive concert dedicated to the 86th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will begin in the Estonian National Opera, where President Arnold Rüütel will deliver his Independence Day speech. A reception hosted by the President of the Republic and Mrs. Ingrid Rüütel will follow the concert. The anniversary celebrations will be televised live by Estonian Television.

NOTICE TO PRESS: Journalists wishing to cover the ceremony "Estonia is Grateful" on 23 February are requested to register by calling the phone number 631 6229 or sending an e-mail to kaidi.aher@vpk.ee by Friday, 20 February. The journalists are requested to arrive at the Kadriorg Art Museum not later than 11:45 am.

Journalists wishing to cover the events on February 24 are requested to apply for accreditation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Centre by 19 February 12:00, phone number 63 17 630, e-mail address centre@vm.ee, indicating the names of journalists, photographers or cameramen, their personal identification codes and the names of media organisation, as well as the events to be covered.

At 13:00 pm on Friday, 20 February, a background briefing on the anniversary events and possibilities to cover them will take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Centre (Islandi Väljak 1), representatives of the Office of the President, Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Personal Protection Service participating. All those interested are welcome, but cameras, microphones and dictation machines are not allowed at the briefing.
