The President of the Republic attended the closing session of an international security conference
13.02.2004

President Rüütel today attended the closing session of the international conference "Dual Enlargement and the Baltic States: Security Policy Implications' organized by the George C. Marshall Center and the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute, and met with the leaders of the George C. Marshall Center.

The President of the Republic noted that there was a major difference in whether such a conference was taking place in Brussels, Berlin or Tallinn, and added that, in the international environment dominating as lately as ten years ago, it would have been out of the question to organize an event like this in Tallinn.

"Estonia is going to be a border state as a result of the dual enlargement. This is a new challenge and responsibility for Estonia, for the other Baltic States as well as for the entire Alliance. It is extremely important to perceive and share that responsibility. This is why I wish that we could reconvene with you in Tallinn to discuss security policy situation in the region and in the entire world," President Rüütel closing the conference said.

The George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies is an institution meant to promote dialogue and mutual understanding among the peoples of American, European and Eurasian countries by means of studies and research. In 1993, the center was given the name of legendary George C. Marshall in order to indicate that its goal was to continue his mission to develop defense education and put visions into practice.
