The President of the Republic proclaimed the Year of the Estonian Flag
02.02.2004

President Arnold Rüütel today at Tartu proclaimed 2004 the Year of the Estonian Flag. At the event, also Chairwoman of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma and Prime Minister Juhan Parts delivered addresses.

The President of the Republic in his speech said that our national independence had been born fighting under the blue, black and white, and we had regained our independence singing under these very colours.

According to President Rüütel, the year 2004 was particularly appropriate for celebrating it as the Year of the Estonian Flag since Estonia, in May, would become a Member State of the European Union. "Our blue, black and white tricolour in this international organisation will bear and symbolize our national dignity - both for ourselves and for the rest of Europe," the President of the Republic said in his today's address.

The proclamation of the Year of the Estonian Flag marked the start of celebrations on the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the Peace of Tartu. In this year, it will be 120 years since the blue-black-white flag was consecrated in the church of Otepää.

The President of the Republic will deliver a speech also at the concert dedicated to the 84th anniversary of the Peace of Tartu this evening in Tallinn, at the Concert Hall Estonia.
