The President of the Republic met the Chief Justice of Supreme Court
26.01.2004

The President of the Republic, Arnold Rüütel, today at Kadriorg met with the Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Uno Lõhmus.

The Chief Justice of Supreme Court informed the President of the present state of our court system and its preparedness to join the European Union. Uno Lõhmus noted that the Courts Act passed in 2002 had not completed the court administration reform and, thus, the principle of judicial independence had not been fully implemented in Estonia.

The President of the Republic shared the concern of the Chief Justice about non-observance of the Supreme Court's decision concerning the restitution of the property of resettlers, which might cause problems regarding the constitutional values.

At the end of the meeting, President Rüütel thanked the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for his thus-far businesslike and constructive cooperation.
