The President of the Republic in Cyprus opened an economic forum

President Rüütel today opening an Estonian-Cypriot economic forum at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry called on local entrepreneurs to build with Estonia closer economic relations than so far.

"Economic cooperation should have an important place in the Estonian-Cypriot relationship. Estonia has invested relatively much in Cyprus and Estonians appreciate the sunny Cyprus as a vacation spot. I am sure that EU membership will create even more favourable conditions for the continuation of our economic cooperation," said the President of the Republic.

President Rüütel in his address provided an overview of Estonian economic environment and prospective fields of cooperation between Estonian and Cypriot businessmen. Meelis Atonen, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications, accompanying the Estonian Head of State in Cyprus explained Estonia's economic policy more thoroughly. Toomas Luman, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, acquainted the forum participants in detail with the Estonian business environment.

The forum attracted active attention of Cypriot business community and was attended by 50 entrepreneurs as well as by several Ambassadors accredited to and residing in Cyprus. All members of the Estonian business delegation have already had several contacts with their Cypriot counterparts.

To the business delegation headed by Chairman of ECCI Toomas Luman belong Viljar Jaamu (Tallink), Väino Kaldoja (Silberauto), Tiit Kuuli (FKSM), Hugo Osula (MootorReisi AS), Sven Pertens (Talter), Heino Priimägi (AS Kalev), and Peep Siimon (ESCO).

This evening, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, and Mrs Fotini Papadopoulou at the Presidential Palace will host a state banquet in honour of the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel.
