The President of the Republic finished his state visit to Cyprus
10.01.2004

President Rüütel today finished his state visit to the Republic of Cyprus. Before leaving Cypriot capital Nicosia, the Estonian Head of State once more met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

At a press conference that took place at the Larnaca Airport, President Rüütel told that the state visit had been necessary, successful and very pleasing. "Possibilities to deepen relations between Estonia and Cyprus cover a wide range - from economy to cultural and educational issues. Owing to this state visit, contacts between us have reached a new level. The imminent membership of our two countries in the European Union will definitely contribute to a rapid progress of our mutual relations in the nearest future. Although Estonia and Cyprus are separated by several thousand kilometres, we can offer a lot to each other," President Rüütel said.

During the visit, the President of the Republic as well as the Ministers, the Commander of the Defence Forces and other members of the official delegation accompanying the President on the state visit had a great number of meetings with their Cypriot counterparts. The visit of the Estonian Head of State aroused a lively interest of the Cypriot press. On top of that, members of the business delegation experienced an active interest of Cypriot businessmen to develop economic relations with Estonia.

Estonia and Cyprus in the framework of EU accession talks have worked closely together as members of the Luxembourg Group. Reciprocal high-level visits serve the purpose of promoting bilateral cooperation, and contribute to rapprochement between countries. For Estonia, good relations with Cyprus at the same time constitute a part of its goal to strengthen bilateral relations with the Mediterranean Member States of the European Union and, thus, help to ensure smooth cooperation with these countries.
