The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Great Britain

President Rüütel received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Nigel HaywoodPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Nigel Haywood.

The President of the Republic said that the relations between Estonia and Great Britain were characterized by regular and substantial political dialogue including features like communication between heads of state and government. According to President Rüütel, Estonia was delighted at it and wanted to find new possibilities to intensify our contacts.

The Ambassador of Great Britain said in his speech held in Estonian that the European Union could learn from Estonia’s considerable experience gained since the reestablishment of its independence. He added that Great Britain was very glad about the results of Estonian referendum because the European Union needed Estonia, and assured that Great Britain wanted to hear Estonia’s voice among the voices of the EU Member States. Ambassador Haywood emphasized that no new artificial barriers whatever must be created in Europe.

The President of the Republic noted that at present the processes of European integration were in an interesting and deciding stage for all countries, and added that Estonia appreciated very much Great Britain’s support to its accession to the European Union and NATO. President Rüütel emphasized that Estonia was aware of and ready for the responsibilities arising from its future status as NATO's border state. "I am confident that Estonia and Great Britain in the years ahead will identify many more areas in which we can give each other a helping hand and work together in the interests of the whole continent," the Estonian Head of State added.
