President Rüütel received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of Israel, Shemi TzurPresident Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of Israel, Shemi Tzur.

The President of the Republic noted that the relations between Estonia and Israel were good and characterized by mutual respect. "I am sure that for the purpose of increasing mutual knowledge and expanding the scope of our contacts it is necessary to intensify the relations between our two states. By that, I mean both political, trade and cultural relations," the President of the Republic said. According to President Rüütel, Israel with its cultural traditions and extremely rich history had already in the past been, and still was, an object of interest and research for numerous Estonians, which was the reason why the prospects for cultural and educational cooperation between Estonia and Israel were very good.

According to the Ambassador of Israel, his country welcomed Estonia's upcoming accession to NATO and supported Estonia's integration into the European Union. Ambassador Tzur said that he was looking forward to further strengthening of political, economic and cultural relations that had emerged over the last decade. "Israel believes that Estonia will make a great contribution to the development of NATO and the European Union as well as of the Middle East," Ambassador Tzur contended.

The President of the Republic noted that Estonia was closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and was concerned about the difficulties the region had encountered, and assured that Estonia saw a solution to the situation in peaceful measures only.
