The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea

President Rüütel received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Hong Jung-pyoPresident Rüütel today received the letter of credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Hong Jung-pyo.

The President of the Republic noted that, in the years since the establishment of our diplomatic relations, contacts between Estonia and Korea had made a rapid progress. According to President Rüütel, Estonia was interested in expanding the scope of economic contacts with the Republic of Korea. The President also said that he believed exchange of business delegations to significantly contribute to increasing knowledge of each other's economic life.

The Korean Ambassador congratulated the President of the Republic on the results of the referendum on EU accession on September 14 and added that the Koreans admired Estonia's rapid progress since the restoration of independence in 1991.

President Rüütel contended that Estonia valued highly and supported the activities of the Republic of Korea to reduce tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula and hoped for a peaceful settlement of the crisis. According to the President of the Republic, Estonia held that North Korea had to fully comply with all the provisions of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
