27.10.2003

President Rüütel today at the Tallinn English College opened the 44th international session of the European Youth Parliament.

The President of the Republic in his opening address emphasized that the European Youth Parliament had become a unique school where at international sessions local, regional and global issues were analysed, conclusions drawn and public assessments given.

President Rüütel said that, observing the Estonian political life, we saw scores of capable young people: "Several of those who have participated in the work of the European Youth Parliament by now have become advisers to our government members and secretaries general, active employees at our embassies and in other areas of life."

The President of the European Youth Parliament is Bettina Carr-Allinson, on whose initiative the organisation in 1987 was founded in France, at Fontainebleau. The headquarters of the youth parliament are in England. Young people from European countries belonging to the organisation assemble in sessions three times a year in order to discuss matters important to them. The youth also send their resolutions to the European Parliament.

Estonia has been a member of the European Youth Parliament since 1995.
