23.10.2003

The President of the Republic met with the Chairman of the House of Representatives, Valer DorneanuPresident Arnold Rüütel continuing his state visit to Romania this evening visited the Parliament where he had talks with the Chairman of the Senate, Nicolae Vćcćroiu, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives, Valer Dorneanu.

The Chairmen of both Houses congratulated the Estonian nationals on their decision to join the European Union and on the successful reforms. They expressed desire to have a share in Estonia's accession experience and to intensify the dialogue between the Parliaments of the two countries. The President of the Republic confirmed Estonia's willingness to do that.

The Chairman of the Senate expressed regret that the Romanians, as yet, did not have enough information about Estonia, which was possibly one of the reasons for the low level of our bilateral trade relations. Mr Vćcćroiu voiced a sincere desire that the visit of the Estonian Head of State enlivened not only our economic contacts but also the Estonian-Romanian relations in the field of culture, health care and education.

Mr Dorneanu added that one of the possible fields of cooperation could be agriculture, on which Romania faces negotiations with the European Union. He also emphasized the essential role of organisations for regional cooperation in ensuring development and stability.

This evening, the President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, will host a state dinner in honour of the Estonian Head of State and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel.
