The President of the Republic received participants in Kindred Peoples Days

The President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg met with representatives of the Finno-Ugric peoples participating in the festival Kindred Peoples Days.

There were Mari, Komi, Udmurtian, Mordovian, Hungarian and Estonian cultural figures among the guests, but, in addition to the aforementioned, also representatives of the Saami, Vepsian and Livonian peoples take part in the Kindred Peoples Days.

The meeting addressed mutual cultural and other contacts as well as the forthcoming World Congress.

The first Kindred Peoples Days were carried out in Finland in 1928, a year later, the days took place in Estonia. The movement of kindred peoples was revived at the initiative of Estonians in 1989 and, for now, the majority of the Finno-Ugric peoples take part in it. Next year, the IV World Congress of the Finno-Ugric Peoples will take place in Tallinn.
