The President of the Republic met the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu

President Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu to exchange views about diverse topical issues of foreign policy.

The meeting focused on the work of the EU Intergovernmental Conference and the ratification process of the Constitutional Treaty. The President of the Republic and the Foreign Affairs Committee shared the view that Estonia had to act wisely at the Intergovernmental Conference for Estonia's capabilities in the future European Union depended on these actions.

President Rüütel expanded on the recent meeting between the three Baltic Presidents in Riga and, thereafter, took interest in what was the Foreign Committee's position on the cooperation among the Baltic States and the Baltic Sea Countries. The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson, opined that the upcoming accession of Estonia and several other Baltic Sea Countries to the European Union and NATO would definitely create new opportunities for broader cooperation among the countries concerned.

On top of that, the meeting addressed Estonia’s accession to NATO and discussed the last visits of the President of the Republic and his forthcoming state visit to Romania. Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu briefed President Rüütel on their forthcoming meeting with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Duma.
