The President of the Republic met with Tunne Kelam
14.10.2003

President Arnold Rüütel at today's meeting with the Chairman of the Pro Patria Union, Tunne Kelam, discussed with him Estonia's national objectives and the National Agreement as a manifestation of the latter.

According to Tunne Kelam, the Pro Patria Union attached particular importance to such objectives set by the agreement as fertility rate and appreciation of education, and to the existence of economic guarantees to achieve the these objectives. The Chairman of the Pro Patria Union expressed satisfaction that the draft agreement was taking account of the Pro Patria Union's proposals concerning, for instance, support for family farms and, likewise, equal treatment of big and small enterprises.

In the words of Tunne Kelam, it would be extremely deplorable if the process having started with broad political support before the election lost its importance. He voiced hope that all political and citizens’ associations would work together in the name of our national objectives. "It would give our people new hope and set clear goals," Tunne Kelam noted. Furthermore, the Chairman of the Pro Patria Union pointed out the need to lay down in the agreement the status of Estonia as a nation state, and an obligation to preserve the principles of our present language and citizenship policy, on which the objectives of the National Agreement were based.

President Rüütel thanked the Pro Patria Union for their help in drawing up the National Agreement.

The Pro Patria Union Executive Board yesterday announced that they would decide upon the authorization for the Chairman of the Pro Patria Union to sign the National Agreement after having examined the final text of the draft agreement.
