The President of the Republic honoured the first Education Prize laureatesPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg handed over the first Education Prize Awards of the President's Cultural Foundation. From among 35 candidates, three recipients of the Education Prize had been selected.

The Education Prizes 2003 were awarded to Tarmo Kerstna, teacher-methodologist at the Upper Secondary School of Ülenurme, for his outstanding work in the field of education organisation; to Kersti Nigesen, Head of the educational establishment "Collegium Educationis Revaliae", for having created a new type of educational establishment and a unique educational model; and to Professor Martin Ehala, Chair-holder at the Pedagogical University of Tallinn and author of teaching materials for upper secondary schools.

President Rüütel presenting the prizes said: "The Estonian literature throughout ages has offered excellent portraits of Teachers – magnanimous wise guides. As readers, we are able to see why the example of teacher Laur, but also of legendary school leaders Wikman and Treffner, can inspire young people. Because there are teachers like them in our midst too. They are these very individuals who can make the young appreciate knowledge and human values."

“The Education Prize, just like the Cultural Foundation's Science and Culture Prizes, has been designed to highlight importance of one of the guarantees of our national survival,” the President of the Republic said.

According to Tarmo Kerstna, teacher-methodologist at the Upper Secondary School of Ülenurme, he and the other winners of the prize were glad that teachers were about to receive more attention, and, in addition, he voiced hope that this prize became a tradition.

The Chairman of the Board of the Cultural Foundation, Indrek Neivelt, contended that the foundation would continue to award Education Prizes, and voiced hope that next year more candidates would be put up.

The Education Prize established this year is awarded to educators at all levels having distinguished themselves by professional excellence in Estonian educational life as teachers, university teachers, leaders or employees of educational establishments, authors of textbooks or methodological materials, as well as initiators and implementers of practical educational innovations, or as education officials who have developed education policy. The funder of the Education Prize is Hansapank.
