25.09.2003

President Rüütel today at the UN General Assembly met with the President of Serbia and Montenegro, Svetozar Marović. President Marović congratulated the Estonian people on their decision to join the European Union.

According to the President of Serbia and Montenegro, Estonia after regaining its independence had managed to quickly and successfully develop its economy and to implement all necessary reforms. The President added that Serbia and Montenegro were most interested in Estonia's experience regarding accession to the European Union. The President of the Republic assured that Estonia was ready to contribute to the development of Serbia and Montenegro by sharing with them its experience.

The Presidents of Estonia and Serbia and Montenegro noted that it was necessary, in order to create better conditions for cooperation, to put our relations on a firm contractual basis.

In the morning, President Rüütel met briefly also with the President of Argentina, Néstor Kirchner, and the President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

The President of Argentina contended that Estonia and Argentina had many possibilities to work together both at regional and global level, and invited President Rüütel to visit Argentina. The President of the Republic, on his part, invited the President of Argentina to visit Estonia in order to deal more thoroughly, among other things, with possibilities for our bilateral cooperation.

The President of Cyprus expressed delight at Estonia’s decision to join the European Union and voiced hope that President Rüütel not later than early next year made a state visit to Cyprus to discuss prospects for our cooperation in the European Union.
