The President of the Republic met the President of Russia

President Arnold Rüütel today in New York met briefly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Heads of State discussed possibilities to develop economic and cultural relations between Estonia and Russia, and also addressed the need to fight terrorism and AIDS together.

The President of the Republic also spoke about Estonia's plans to fight unemployment in North East Estonia. President Putin deemed it to be very positive.

The President of Russia expressed contentment that the disagreements about church issues had found a solution.

According to President Rüütel, there were no tensions between the Russian-speaking and Estonian-speaking population groups in Estonia. The President of Russia assured that he was pleased to hear that.
