The President of the Republic met the President of Nicaragua24.09.2003
 President Rüütel today in New York met with the President of Nicaragua, Enrique Bolańos Geyer. Their meeting addressed bilateral relations between Estonia and Nicaragua and prospects of our cooperation.
The President of the Republic thanked Nicaragua for having rapidly recognized the independence of the Republic of Estonia and contended that Estonia was willing to establish diplomatic relations with Nicaragua. According to President Rüütel, Estonia was also interested in shortly signing with Nicaragua an agreement on mutual visa exemption. President Geyer, too, opined that our bilateral relations should be intensified.
The Heads of State talked also about Estonias forthcoming accession to the European Union. According to the President of the Republic, Nicaragua and Estonia after Estonias accession to the European Union would definitely have more opportunities to cooperate, and suggested environmental protection, cultural exchange, research and information technology as possible areas of cooperation.
The Nicaraguan President spoke highly of Estonias progress in the field of information technology and expressed his conviction that our cooperation in this area would have good prospects.
President Geyer voiced concern about corruption still being a problem in Nicaragua and was interested in sharing Estonias experience in fighting corruption.
The President of Nicaragua invited the President of the Republic to Nicaragua, and President Rüütel, on his part, invited President Geyer to visit Estonia.
Subsequent to the meeting, the President of the Republic signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict, and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution, and child pornography.
