The President of the Republic met the Defence Minister of Ukraine

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon at Kadriorg received the Defence Minister of Ukraine, Yevgenii Marchuk.

At the meeting, both the Estonian Head of State and the Ukrainian Defence Minister voiced satisfaction with deepening and diversifying relations between Estonia and Ukraine, which, in the opinion of the sides, increasingly involved also defence cooperation. According to Minister Marchuk, Ukraine hoped to receive from Estonia support and advice for its preparations to join NATO. President Rüütel assured that Estonia was willing to share with Ukraine its knowledge and experience acquired while undergoing the extensive and responsible accession process.

The meeting thereafter addressed the situation in Iraq from where the Ukrainian Defence Minister had just returned, and where both Estonian and Ukrainian units at present are acquiring experience in how to operate within the coalition forces.
