The President of the Republic greeted Village Convention
21.08.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today at Haljala delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the 5th Convention of Estonian Villages.

The President of the Republic voiced appreciation for the Movement "Kodukant" who have initiated the idea of the conventions and convened them. The Head of State noted that "Kodukant" over years had done a great work in order to keep the Estonian village alive and to preserve our basic national values. "Unfortunately, Estonian politicians have not yet been able to fulfil all these expectations the Estonians including the rural people had twelve years ago, when our independence was restored, but the European Union will help us at long last translate many of these expectations into reality," President Rüütel said.

The organizers of the convention thanked the President of the Republic for having supported the Village Movement and having participated in their doings. Arnold Rüütel in 1996 attended the 1st Convention of Estonian Villages in Ida-Virumaa as well.
