The President of the Republic met the Head of State of Lithuania

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon in Vilnius had a most friendly meeting with Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas. The Heads of State talked about bilateral relations between Estonia and Lithuania and development of regional cooperation in the future European Union.

President Paksas thanked through President Rüütel Estonia and its businessmen for their confidence, which manifested itself in the fact that Estonia, as to the volume of investments, placed third in Lithuania. According to Rolandas Paksas, Lithuania wanted to reply by achieving the same level in Estonia.

The Presidents also talked about trade relations between Estonia and Lithuania and joint regional projects. Both sides expressed interest in completing the motorway Via Baltica and a common energy system. The Presidents noted on this point that implementation of those projects would benefit not only the Baltic States but also a far bigger region beyond these countries.

President Rüütel tomorrow will attend the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the coronation of King Mindaugas of Lithuania.
