The President of the Republic received the best university graduates

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today at the Kadriorg Baroque Palace received the best university and college graduates of Estonia. 56 graduates from 30 universities and colleges had been invited to the reception.

President Rüütel in his address recalled his meeting earlier this week in Germany with Estonian youths studying and doing research there, and noted: "During this wonderful meeting I had a constant feeling that I was facing young scientists who will make their research fields advance significantly. But what gave me the most pleasure this evening was the confidence that they will make Estonia advance as well, since these postgraduate students had firm plans to return home after their studies. Having heard this, it occurred to me that Estonia, as to its capacity to hold our talented young people, isn’t too small at all."

The Deputy Secretary General for Education and Science of the Ministry of Education, Kristjan Haller, congratulating the graduates said that this day was important to Estonia as a whole because our society was strengthened by a considerable number of well-educated energetic specialists. At the same time, Kristjan Haller urged the graduates to keep in mind that although all of them had certainly received a very good education, it was not sufficient for handling everything in life and, therefore, it was necessary to continuously learn something new.

Raimond Tamm from the Estonian Agricultural University, who replied with a speech on behalf of the graduates, stressed that if we wanted our society to be healthy and sustainable we had to value higher education more. He underscored in addition that opportunities of university leavers were steadily growing and found that university leavers were obliged towards society to contribute the utmost extent of their knowledge to the progress of Estonia.

The Jazz Ensemble of Kuusalu and Viimsi Schools of Music performed music at the reception.
