The President of the Republic met the Mayor of Berlin
16.06.2003

President Arnold Rüütel on his working visit to Germany today met with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and made an entry in the Golden Book of Berlin.

The President of the Republic at their meeting recalled that the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, once had been granted a charter of city rights originating in Germany – the Lübeck Law. President Rüütel expressed his delight that several Estonian children due to cooperation between Estonian and German physicians had regained life and health in Berlin, and thanked Berlin also for giving Estonian doctors an opportunity to improve their professional skills.

The Mayor of Berlin comparing Estonia and Berlin voiced his satisfaction that both of them had done well in the past and that they shortly would have the chance to capitalize on their experience in order to build a common future in the European Union.

President Rüütel highlighted the vivid cultural exchange between Estonia and Berlin, and voiced hope that we had increasingly more shared projects and events in order to promote ever more actively our cooperation in the fields of science, economy, culture etc.

Mayor Wowereit opined that the Baltic Sea region was turning into a growth engine of the EU, and that Berlin, too, should make use of the chances offered by this region. He added that this was the very reason, why he intended to take a big business delegation with him on his visit to Tallinn in September.

After the meeting, President Rüütel familiarized himself with the symbol of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gates, and received the gates’ copy in miniature as a present from the Mayor of Berlin.

This evening, President Rüütel will meet with Norbert Schindler, Member of Bundestag and Vice-President of the German Union of Farmers.

Later this evening, the Ambassador of Estonia to Germany will host a reception in honour of the President of the Republic at our embassy.

Tomorrow, after the conference, President Rüütel will meet with the Federal President of Germany, Johannes Rau, and the Chairman of the Bundestag European Affairs Committee, Matthias Wissmann. In the evening, President Rüütel will have dinner with Estonian students studying in Germany.
