The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister
28.05.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today at a customary working lunch with Juhan Parts discussed with him topical issues of our domestic and foreign policy.

Their discussion focussed on Estonia's position at the European Convention. According to the President of the Republic, the convention's stances would have a direct influence on the outcome of Estonia's referendum. President Rüütel observed that the meetings during his recent visit to Pärnumaa had confirmed peoples' willingness to actively think these things through and their expectations to be given all-inclusive information about the European Union.

The President made to Prime Minister Juhan Parts a proposal to represent the Estonian state at the European Union Summit in Thessaloniki. The Head of State further noted that he deemed it important that Estonia's foreign policy positions be shaped in collaboration between relevant state institutions.

At the today's meeting, also our internal security and safety of law courts were under discussion. According to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice next week would present to the Government his report and proposals relating to these matters.

In addition, the supplementary budget and the need to find possibilities of supporting university students and young families were touched upon.
