22.05.2003

Chaired by President Arnold Rüütel, the Roundtable on Local Government and Regional Development this afternoon met at Kadriorg.

Minister Jaan Õunapuu presented a plan for reorganization of regional governance, which, in the words of the Minister, was targeted at effective functioning of local authorities, regions and the state as a whole. The leaders of the local government associations represented at the Roundtable and President Rüütel, as well, emphasized the same target.

The Head of State added that strong local governance as was an indispensable basis for a democratic state, and that this principle hopefully would be reflected in the process of reaching our national agreement and the results thereof. For that reason, the President called on local government leaders to take part in both working out the agreement and the continuing dialogue between the local governments and state.

The Chairman of the Estonian Home Decoration Movement, Arvi Altmäe, briefed the roundtable participants on the home decoration competition and plans to offer possibilities to participate in the competition also to rural municipalities and towns.
