The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of Malta

The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of MaltaPresident Arnold Rüütel today at noon at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of Malta, Mark Miceli-Farrugia, who presented to him his credentials.

The President of the Republic expressed satisfaction with good relations between Estonia and Malta: "The status of being EU accession countries has brought our two nations closer together: we are nations having similar positions on and interest in several issues." According to President Rüütel, the bilateral relations between Estonia and Malta over the last years had made great strides: political contacts had enlivened and exchange of visits intensified.

The Estonian Head of State asked the Ambassador to convey to the President of Malta, Mr Guido de Marco, his sincere greetings, and to thank him for the invitation to visit Malta. President Rüütel assured that he was with great interest looking forward to the state visit scheduled to take place in early autumn and hoped this to give a fresh impetus to the development of relations between the two countries.

According to the Maltese Ambassador, several parallels could be drawn between the experience and aspirations of Estonia and Malta. He expressed the hope that after both countries acceded to the European Union soon, their mutual relations deepened as well.
