The President of the Republic met the Minister of Culture

President Arnold Rüütel this morning at Kadriorg met with Minister of Culture Urmas Paet to get an overview of the ministry's plans for the near future.

The President was interested in what kind of possibilities to promote cultural life in rural places the Minister was seeing. According to Urmas Paet, it was necessary and possible to enhance accessibility of cinematographic art in rural regions and also to motivate theatres to give performances outside their permanent theatre houses as well. In addition, the Minister pointed out that it was possible to use for developing border areas allocations from the European Union programme for regional investments.

Answering the question of the Head of State as to the chances of solving the financial problems of Estonian theatres, the new-fledged Minister said that this was, first of all, a matter of correct planning. However, in order to alleviate financial concerns of the Estonian National Opera, the ministry had applied for five million kroons to be earmarked by the supplementary budget.

During the today's meeting, also opportunities to streamline the work and to improve the content of public law broadcasting institutions were touched upon. The President noted that viewers had every reason to expect that, above all, the Estonian TV broadcast nonviolent programmes educating the public.
