The President of the Republic met with the Auditor General

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg met with Mihkel Oviir having recently assumed the office of Auditor General.

The Auditor General provided the President with an overview of his action plan for the near future, which gives deepening of cooperation with the Riigikogu special emphasis. As noted by Mihkel Oviir, his objective was to achieve that parliamentary control of how the taxpayer's money is being used were introduced in Estonia. The President concurred with the Auditor General that forming a pertinent committee in the Riigikogu as it was designed in the coalition agreement between the Res Publica, the Reform Party and the People's Union would contribute to the accomplishment of this objective.

Auditor General Mihkel Oviir briefed the Head of State on the strategic targets of the State Audit Office for the next three years. At the same time, they elaborated on the capabilities of local governments and on the use of budgetary funds, which, according to the Head of State, was one of the key issues in the context of Estonia's development and international cooperation.

The President expressed his desire to meet with the Auditor General on a regular basis. Mihkel Oviir on his part asked the President to inform the State Audit Office of those problems he would gain knowledge of during his numerous meetings with Estonia’s residents and officials.
